Full-time Academic Support teachers work with boys in the Senior and Junior Schools. Support work is done with boys who need help to overcome difficulties in basic processes, such as reading and writing, and with boys who are well above average in ability or achievement. Assessment, intervention and support are central functions of the Academic Support Team (AST). There is a Literacy Support class in Years 8,9 & 10. Additionally boys may be supported in their ordinary classes or work with the Academic Support teachers, either individually or in small groups. Parents are encouraged to discuss with House Heads the possible need for assistance for their son.
The AST is responsible for monitoring and developing extension programmes in the School. The aim is to provide educational development at an appropriate level to the individual. We recognise the value of curricular modification for the more able boy whose needs are not met by the syllabus in his regular class programme. Boys throughout the School who show specific aptitudes and abilities for further extension, may be set appropriate work or otherwise advanced in a particular area.
Parents are advised to consult the Academic Support Team or their son's House Head before arranging tutoring outside the School. Tutoring can do more harm than good if a boy is already performing as well as he can. If a boy does need tutoring then it is effective only if he realises that this involves extra work and that it is not a prop or a substitute for his own endeavours.
We are concerned too, that parents should not be suffering the expense of tutoring unnecessarily, that it is of an adequate standard and that there is sufficient co-operation between the boy's class teachers and his tutor. Tutoring opportunities are provided in the School in the Residence at no cost to families.
The AST can provide the contact details of some external tutors. Tuition at very reasonable rates is available from Scotch College graduates who are familiar with the context and the courses.
Careers Advice
Careers advice is available to assist boys and parents with subject selection, vocational guidance and work experience. A range of programmes and services is initiated and run by the Careers Adviser for boys and parents.
