ACADEMIC CURRICULUM
International Baccalaureate
The International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO), a non-profit educational foundation based in Geneva, Switzerland, offers to schools the Primary Years Programme (PYP), the Middle Years Programme (MYP) and the Diploma Programme (DP). Scotch College is authorised by the IBO to offer the PYP and the MYP.
The PYP for Years 1 to 5 and the MYP for Years 6 to 10, form the framework for the Scotch College curriculum with the aim of providing a seamless education in the formative years. The Overarching Learning Outcomes of the Curriculum Framework of Western Australia form the basis of both programmes.
The Primary Years Programme (PYP) for Years 1 to 5
The PYP identifies a body of knowledge for all students in six subject areas:
- Languages
- Social Studies (Society & Environment)
- Mathematics
- Science & Technology
- The Arts
- Personal, Social & Physical Education
- Community & Service record
In the spirit of internationalism, students are required to learn a second language in addition to the language of instruction of the School. At Scotch College specialist teachers take the boys for French, Art, Music, Library and Physical Education. Religious Education is usually taken by the class teacher. The PYP Student Profile aims to develop students who are inquirers, thinkers, communicators, principled, caring, open-minded, well balanced, knowledgeable and reflective risk takers.
Further details of the PYP can be found in The Primary Years Programme: A Guide for Parents. This booklet is distributed to all incoming students and is available at the Junior School Office.
The Middle Years Programme (MYP) for Years 6 to 10
The MYP delivers an academic programme of excellence for students of mixed abilities and focuses on the education of the whole person, in preparation for a life of active, responsible citizenship.
The eight academic subject areas offered at Scotch College are:

The five Areas of Interaction of the MYP provide a framework of learning with the programme's focus on the students' intellectual and social development. All areas of interaction are reflected in every programme of study. The Year 11/12 Handbook will be provided to Year 10 students in July 2009 to assist students in their selection of subject for Years 11 and 12.
The five Areas of Interaction are:
- Approaches to Learning
- Community and Service
- Homo Faber (an appreciation of the creative and inventive genius of people)
- Environments and Outdoor Education
- Health and Social Education
Taken as a whole, the curriculum provides a balanced education that will equip students for effective participation in the modern world.
Further details of the MYP can be found in The Middle Years Programme: A Guide for Parents. This booklet is distributed to all incoming students and is available at the School Office.
