COMMUNICATING STUDENT PROGRESS
The School aims to keep parents informed of their son's progress throughout the year. This is achieved by sending home annotated work samples; reports; interviews and student led conferences. The programme for the year includes:
Whole Year
Work samples are sent home to keep parents informed of work being carried out at school.
Term 1: Parent Information Night - held in the second week of the school year; Parent Teacher Interviews - held in the second week of Term 1
Term 2: Student Led Conferences - held in the latter part of Term 2; Semester 1 Report
Term 3: Three way Interviews - held in the second week of Term 3
Term 4: Semester 2 Report
From time to time you may have concerns about your son's progress in any aspect of school life. The School strongly recommends that concerns be brought to the attention of the School immediately.
There is a range of staff in the school who will be pleased to address concerns.
1. Class Teachers
Classroom teachers are responsible for the pastoral care of their students. The classroom teacher will often be the first point of contact when concerns arise.
2. Academic Support Team
The Academic Support Team consists of a School Psychologist, Support Teacher and Speech Pathologist. It is recommended that the Support Team be contacted through the classroom teacher. There may be times when parents feel the need to contact members of the Support Team directly. Parents should feel comfortable contacting Support Team members directly on these occasions.
Procedure for Making Appointments in the Junior and Middle Schools
Parents are reminded that any queries pertaining to curriculum that cannot, in the first instance, be answered by the classroom or specialist teacher, should be addressed to Ms Andrea McNally (Years 1-5) and Mr Ben Beaton (MYP Coordinator Years 6-10). All queries relating to pastoral care issues should initially be raised with the classroom teacher. If further assistance is required with an issue, an appointment should be made with Ms Andrea McNally (Years 1-5) and Mr Wayne Ramsay (Years 6-7).
Encouraging Excellence
An award card system is in place across the school to encourage students to do their best and to acknowledge both their endeavour and achievements. Excellence awards recognizing endeavour, citizenship and achievement are presented by classroom teachers. Outstanding Achievement Awards acknowledge students who have demonstrated growth in one or more elements of the IBO Learner Profile. Outstanding Achievement Awards are presented at Assemblies.
Academic Support
A dedicated enrichment team provides educational support to those students in Years 1 to 7 who are identified as achieving significantly above or below chronological age/benchmarks and /or having specific learning difficulties. Parents are consulted prior to their son's inclusion in any work in the enrichment area.
Referrals
It is common for teachers, in consultation with parents, to refer children to other specialists such as speech pathologists, occupational therapists, audiologists, optometrists, educational psychologists, child health nurses and paediatricians. This is to ensure the child has the best possibilities to learn and if any problems are noticed they are addressed early in the child's life. In the event that a child is achieving well below or well above the academic expectation of their teacher, their parents are notified and the Enrichment staff, in consultation with the Head of Junior or Middle School, will decide on the best way to meet the child's needs. This will require parental involvement. Further assessment may be required by the Junior School Counsellor or Enrichment Support Team. When referrals are made, it is important there is close communication between the teacher, the parents and the specialists to enable programmes of greatest benefit to the child to be implemented.
Library Resource Centre
The Resource Centre is open before school, at recess and lunch times for borrowing and exchanging books and for participating in the other activities available. Each class also has one Library period per week. Loss or damage to books will be charged at cost.
