Following his appointment he immediately set to work developing and implementing a Vision, Mission and Values statement for Scotch College. Since then, he has introduced a number of projects to support the overall vision and strategic direction of the School including the introduction and implementation of:

  • a major capital campaign for the building programme

  • a professional development programme for teachers to improve classroom practice

  • an internationally recognised curriculum through the implementation of the International Baccalaureate's Primary and Middle Years Programme for Years 1 to 10 and the possible introduction if the IB Diploma for Years 11 and 12.

  • a Year 11 Leadership curriculum for all boys to broaden the base of leadership recognition in Year 12

  • restructure of the academic year to begin in October

Revd Syme was ordained as a Minister for the Uniting Church in 1990 and has a strong background in education, beginning his career as a sportsmaster and teacher at a number of schools in NSW. Following his ordination, he was employed as Chaplain at Newington College NSW before relocating to Western Australia to fill the position of Deputy Headmaster at Wesley College. A firm believer in life-long learning, Revd Syme has completed a Diploma of Teaching, Bachelor of Education, Bachelor of Theology and Master of Education.

Revd Syme is an active participant in the education community and sits on a number of education boards including:

  • Chair: Western Australian Branch - Assoc. of Heads of Independent School (2007 - to date)

  • Member: National Standing Committee - Assoc. of Heads of Independent School (2007 to date)

  • Board Member: Education Policy Committee - Assoc. of Independent Schools (WA) (2005 to date)

  • Board Member: "Principals' Forum" - Curriculum Council of Western Australia (2006 to date)

In addition, he also sits on a number of external boards:

  • Board member of the Western Australian Institute for Sport (2005 to date)

  • Board member of the Western Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry Business Policy Board (2007 to date)
