Boys will select the areas of the Arts and Design and Technology Programmes that they wish to follow.
The Year 9 academic curriculum continues from Year 8. Boys undertake studies from each of the eight learning areas of the Middle Years Programme. This programme focuses on the education of the whole person, in preparation for a life of active, responsible citizenship.
Boys select the areas of the Arts and Design and Technology programmes they wish to follow. For more information on Year 9 electives please view our Course Selection document.
The Personal Project
An important component of the Year 9 programme is the Personal Project. The Personal Project is an inquiry on a topic of personal choice completed over an extended period of time. Through the project, the boys become proficient in planning and developing a line of thought, collecting information, choosing relevant approaches and techniques, analysing and reviewing. The project is completed in the boys' own time, outside normal school hours, requiring organisation, self-discipline and personal effort.
Over a 12 month period between Years 9 and 10, each boy has a supervisor who acts as a guide and mentor. This important relationship over the early adolescent stage of development has enriched the learning programme at Scotch College. The Personal Project Showcase in September of Year 10 is a celebration of the academic growth that the boys have achieved at the end of their Middle Schooling.
Year 9 Outdoor Education
The ninth learning area of the learning programme is the Outdoor Education programme. The boys in Year 9 will attend a week long programme at 'Moray', the Scotch College Outdoor Education site in Dwellingup. In this time they will apply and extend the skills learnt in the Year 8 programme to the basics of an expedition experience.
