The Year 10 programme is the culmination of the MYP.
The Year 10 academic curriculum continues from Year 9. Boys undertake studies from each of the eight learning areas of the Middle Years Programme. This programme focuses on the education of the whole person, in preparation for a life of active, responsible citizenship.
Boys choose the areas of the Arts and Design and Technology Programmes that they wish to follow as a whole year programme. For more information on Year 10 electives please view our Course Selection document.
At the end of the year the boys are assessed in each of the learning areas and on their Personal Project. Their results are submitted to the International Baccalaureate Organisation. If a boy is successful, he will receive an international certificate in recognition of his achievement.
The Personal Project
An important component of the Year 10 programme is the Personal Project. The Personal Project is an inquiry on a topic of personal choice completed over an extended period of time. Through the project, the boys become proficient in planning and developing a line of thought, collecting information, choosing relevant approaches and techniques, analysing and reviewing. The project is completed in the boys' own time, outside normal school hours, requiring organisation, self-discipline and personal effort.
Over a 12 month period between Years 9 and 10, each boy has a supervisor who acts as a guide and mentor. This important relationship over the early adolescent stage of development has enriched the learning programme at Scotch College. The Personal Project Showcase in September of Year 10 is a celebration of the academic growth that the boys have achieved at the end of their Middle Schooling.
Year 10 Outdoor Education
Outdoor Education is considered the ninth area of learning. Boys in Year 10 will choose one of several options for a week-long expedition at the end of Term 3. This programme allows the boys to use the skills that they have developed over the earlier years of their Outdoor Education Programme.
Decision Time
In preparation for the transition to Senior School, boys will be guided through important decisions in the selection of their Year 11 and 12 courses.
The School's Careers Advisor will meet individually with every Year 10 boy to discuss the course that will best suit his ability and aspirations.
Each boy is encouraged to choose subjects that:
-
enable him to work with his strengths
-
challenge him to make the most of his capabilities
-
provide him with the pathway for the qualifications the he needs to pursue his career and ambitions after he leaves school
-
provide him with life and employability skills
The Careers Advisor will carefully monitor every boy's progress over the remainder of his time at Scotch College. The Careers Advisor and the Director of Teaching and Learning, are always available for boys and parents to discuss a boy's progress and course options. Each boy is able to complete a Decision Time booklet to aid them with their choices.
