Middle School

Our Middle School, home to students in Year 6 to 8 is committed to creating an environment where students are given the best chance to foster their growing independence, social awareness, and leadership capabilities.

We prepare our boys for life by honouring the stage of adolescent years between 11 and 14 with learning experiences, resources and mentorship that will transition them from Junior to Senior School, boyhood to adolescence, dependence to independence.

Scotch College places as much emphasis on how students learn as on what they learn.

Middle School curriculum at Scotch

Our academic programme delivers the Western Australian National Curriculum. Our teaching and learning framework empowers students to think critically, explore concepts deeply through an inquiry-based approach and allows opportunities for interdisciplinary learning to occur.

Scotch College places as much emphasis on how students learn as on what they learn. We focus on building the knowledge, skills, maturity and confidence needed to help each boy realise his full potential.

Breadth of opportunities

Whilst providing an environment where students feel secure, happy and recognised, the middle years are also about offering boys increased opportunity and challenges to discover how they learn, how to manage themselves, how to work with others and where they want to go.

Breadth of learning through the Arts, Design and Technology, Languages, Outdoor Education, Sport and STEM provide opportunities for the boys to develop and pursue areas of interest to sophisticated levels. These experiences extend beyond the classroom as part of our Co-Curricular programme.

Inclusive education and enrichment

At Scotch we are committed to supporting all students, including those with learning challenges as well as those who are recognised as academically talented.

We believe that every student is entitled to relevant, engaging and differentiated learning opportunities that nurture their social, emotional and intellectual development. Our approach ensures each boy is provided with the support and opportunity needed to thrive.

Inclusive Education

Scotch College is a progressive private secondary school that is committed to fostering an inclusive learning environment where all students, including those with diverse learning needs and those identified as gifted and talented, are equally valued and supported.

Our Inclusive Education Programme ensures that every student builds strong foundations for lifelong learning by offering evidence-based, targeted interventions and individualised learning adjustment plans through ongoing data collection.

An Inclusive Education (IE) teacher oversees a particular year group so both parents and students have a point of contact for any concerns. In Middle School the IE teacher collaborates with the Middle School psychologist, homeroom and subject teachers, curriculum leaders as well as the Deputy of Teaching and Learning to ensure students are well supported pastorally and academically.

Enrichment Programme

The Enrichment Programme provides our most academically able students with rich, challenging, learning opportunities beyond the mainstream curriculum. The programme is designed to offer depth and breadth of opportunity in support of a student’s intellectual, social and emotional growth.

The programme aligns with current best practices in the field of gifted and talented education and is characterised by unique and exciting collaborations between our sub-schools and cross-campus collaboration with our sister school, Presbyterian Ladies’ College.

Some opportunities are by invitation and based on outstanding performance in a subject-specific domain or multiple domains. Others are selected by aptitude, application and interest. Opportunities include clubs, broadening initiatives, competitions and tailored outreach programmes with our partners in industry and academia.

Student wellbeing in the Middle School is fostered through dedicated pastoral care programmes, grounded in the principle of recognising and respecting the rights of others.

As part of our Pastoral Care programme, your son will meet daily with his Pastoral Care Group (PCG). In these sessions he will participate in programmes and activities that develop social, emotional and academic skills. These sessions will be led by a pastoral care teacher.

Turas programme

We recognise that Middle School is a journey for all students, the transition from the familiar Junior School environment towards a more independent Secondary model.

Turas, the Gaelic term for a journey or a pilgrimage, is our bespoke Middle School pastoral care programme that honours the age and developmental needs of our students. The Turas Programme intentionally delivers learning opportunities that enable our students to become the best version of themselves, armed with the skills and processes that will best serve them as they step into the last four years of their secondary journey.

The Middle School timetable incorporates one Turas lesson a week to explore our student-centred curriculum developed by our Pastoral Care team. Chapel, Assembly, subject classes and Pastoral Care Group or ‘home room’ serve as key points of contact that promote and reinforce the messages delivered in Turas.

G.R.O.W.T.H series

The Turas Programme culminates in Year 8 with the G.R.O.W.T.H Series which broadly comprises three components:

  1. Respect, Resilience and Relationships (R3)
  2. Outdoor Learning and Adventure
  3. Transition and Celebration

This programme is designed to connect parents, students and the wider community as we all play an integral role in the transition process to Senior School.
