Office of Advancement and Philanthropy

"The true meaning of life is to plant trees under whose shade you do not expect to sit." — Nelson Henderson

The tradition of giving at Scotch College began with its founding in 1897 and continues today.

We owe our existence to an initial donation from the Alexander family. Jane Alexander and her husband, the Hon. William Alexander, seeking a Presbyterian school for boys in Perth, donated 500 pounds towards the establishment of the College. Without this humble and founding gift, our great College would never have come into being.

Scotch College acknowledges with tremendous gratitude the impact of the gifts and donations we have received from parents, Old Scotch Collegians, staff and friends since 1897, which have allowed us to become the world-class College we are today.

Giving ensures the growth and development of our remarkable College. Your gift makes an incredible difference to students today and in the future.

Every gift is vital to our College, no matter how large or small.

Why support us?

Like all independent colleges, our school’s day-to-day operational expenses are met by a combination of fees paid by our parents, as well as grants from State and Federal governments. We acknowledge the many sacrifices made by our community and the generous government support we receive and we use these funds wisely.

In order to grow and flourish, we rely on the goodwill and generosity of the Scotch community to support our College so we can continue to provide scholarships, support students, and deliver contemporary teaching and learning spaces and facilities for many years to come.

Scholarship and Bursary Fund

Each year, Scotch College awards a number of Academic, Music, Boarding and Indigenous Scholarships and Bursaries. Like every Scotch College student, recipients are welcomed into our 'community for life' and receive the many benefits of the Scotch College culture, faith and education of which we are so proud.

Each donation from the Scotch community will help us to offer the gift of a Scotch College education to students to whom it may not otherwise be available.

Make a capital investment

John Maxwell Ferguson Fund

This capital investment fund was named in honour of John Maxwell Ferguson, who financed the relocation of Scotch College from Beaufort Street, Perth to Collegians’ House in Swanbourne in 1904.

His vision and generosity provided a wonderful foundation for the future.

The aim of the JM Ferguson Fund is to draw on the collective financial strength of the greater School community, with the goal of creating a substantial capital base. This capital base, in time, will generate growing returns to become one of the providers of capital funds for the next hundred years of the College’s life.

In order to establish the Fund and enable its successful first stage of development, an effective structure was supported by a number of the College community who generously provided a loan of $50,000 over a five-year-period.

We are now inviting new participants to the Fund via a contribution of a minimum of $25,000 interest-free loan for a period of at least three years.

The Directors of the Fund are John Flecker, Tim Lyons, Paul Carter, Simon Jackson and Paul Davidson.

If you would like to discuss further any of the above, please contact Mel Colling in the Philanthropy Office on philanthropy@scotch.wa.edu.au or +61 8 9383 6987.

Leave a bequest

Alexander Society

The Alexander Society recognises those who have made a provision for the future of Scotch College in their will.

The Society honours the role played by the Alexander family in establishing the school. William and Jane Alexander, concerned by the absence of a Presbyterian school for boys in Perth, made a gift of £500 to the Church in 1896 for the establishment of Scotch College.

This philanthropy began a tradition that has continued for more than 100 years and has allowed for the development of a range of resources for the School. W A Gardner made a bequest of $68,000 in 1968 to establish a fund that has grown to more than $1 million and assists the sons and grandsons of Old Scotch Collegians to attend the school.

A bequest is a tangible way to make a lasting gift that will contribute to the life of Scotch College.

Enquiries regarding making a bequest should be directed to Mel Colling in the Philanthropy Office on philanthropy@scotch.wa.edu.au.

All correspondence and information is treated in the strictest confidence.
