International Baccalaureate Perth

The International Baccalaureate is a globally recognised curriculum offered in more than 5,300 schools in 158 countries.

Scotch is proud to offer the International Baccalaureate curriculum here in Perth for Primary Years and Middle Years Programmes, and the Diploma Programme for senior students.

Provoking curiosity

The IB is a curriculum that provokes curiosity and a passion for learning. It is question-orientated with a focus on skill development, steeped in current educational research. The IB ensures that students develop the skills they need to understand, retain and apply the content they use at school. The student is at the centre of this process and the teacher's aim is to intrigue, excite and inspire independence.

Developing key critical thinking skills

In 2020, the University of Oxford demonstrated that IB students develop significantly higher critical thinking skills than those undertaking a state-based equivalent curriculum.1 Research showed that the IB enhances students' ability to analyse, synthesise and evaluate information.

About the IB

Where do our graduates go?

The IB Diploma is recognised by all major tertiary institutions in Australia.

Our graduates have also gone onto study internationally at esteemed universities including:

  • Cambridge University
  • Chicago College of Performing Arts
  • IE Segovia
  • Imperial College London
  • Oxford University
  • Texas A&M University
  • Stanford University
  • University of Washington
  • Wharton Business School (University of Pennsylvania)

What our families are saying

Our son recently graduated, and we are delighted to have seen our son's development through studying the IB Diploma. We feel that the IB Diploma has produced a well-rounded, articulate, organised young man.

We also felt he benefitted tremendously from the IB Core, particularly Theory of Knowledge and Creativity, Activity and Service. CAS saw him lead a wonderful project of his own initiative, which taught him so much about communication, time-management and problem-solving, and underpinned his job-readiness.

— Katina Law, mother of Joshua Law (OSC 2019)

An industry perspective

If the aim of our education system is to turn out well-rounded, inquiring, broad-thinking students, the IB does that. Business leaders who know the IB rate it highly, and it is a universal when benchmarking education.

— Richard Goyder, past Scotch parent and chairman of Qantas, the AFL and Woodside

Our programmes

Scotch College is recognised as one of the IB schools in Perth who provides three International Baccalaureate programmes, covering all age groups:

Primary Years Programme

The PYP is for students aged 5 to 12 and focuses on the development of the whole child in the classroom and the outside world.

Middle Years Programme

Designed for students aged 11 to 14, the MYP is grounded in academic challenge and life skills, transcending traditional school subjects.

Diploma Programme

Students aged 16 to 19 are eligible to undertake the Diploma. The challenging two-year curriculum provides a qualification that is welcomed by leading universities around the world.

IB Diploma students study courses from six defined subject groups, including Humanities, Sciences, Mathematics and Languages. They undertake a 4,000-word research essay; investigate the nature of knowledge, focusing on how evidence is gathered and used in a contemporary setting; and participate in creative, physical and service activities.

International standards

Scotch's International Baccalaureate programme and teaching methodologies offered here in Perth are audited against internationally established benchmarks. The IB does not own or administer any of the schools that employ its world-renowned education programmes. Scotch College works in partnership with the IB and holds a shared commitment to providing students with the highest level of international education.
