Collective action, lasting impact: The World’s Greatest Shave

Led by students and supported by the wider community, Scotch College and Presbyterian Ladies’ College’s (PLC) World’s Greatest Shave has once again united compassion with action, delivering a powerful outcome for the Leukaemia Foundation.

From the buzz of the clippers to the cheers of support, this year’s event was a defining moment of service across the College. Students and staff from Junior School through to Senior School came together in support
of the Leukaemia Foundation, reaffirming a longstanding tradition that places empathy, courage and action at its heart.

Each year, students and staff at the College volunteer to shave their heads, turning a simple but brave act into a visible statement of solidarity with Australians living with blood cancer. Surrounded by peers, families and staff, the event was marked by a strong sense of shared purpose and community pride.

The impact of this collective effort has been extraordinary. Scotch College was the #1 fundraiser in Australia for the World’s Greatest Shave, raising an incredible $231,877*. When combined with the efforts of PLC, a total of over $300,000 has been raised, representing the largest combined result from a school in the event’s 28-year history. This milestone has been achieved through generosity, commitment and partnership.

Beyond the numbers lies a deeper significance. Blood cancer has affected people within our College communities, reinforcing the importance of the cause and the need for meaningful support Student leadership played a central role throughout the campaign. Jack Mayo, Vice-Captain of School – Service, reflecting on the importance of action informed by understanding: “Hearing from members of our community who have faced this diagnosis shows just how vital the Leukaemia Foundation’s support is for families at every stage.”

Staff involvement further strengthened the event, standing alongside students in encouragement and example. Notably, Headmaster Dr Alec O’Connell, and husband and wife teachers Mrs Jen George from Scotch and Mr Stephen George from PLC also took part.

As the event concluded, its message endured. When students lead with purpose and a community rallies behind them, remarkable outcomes are possible.
