Scotch College offers IB Diploma

Scotch College Headmaster, Revd Andrew Syme, announced this week that the School is offering an alternative to the West Australian Certificate of Education in the form of the globally recognized International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IB Diploma).

Students approaching Year 11 can now choose between the current TEE run by a majority of the schools in Western Australia, or the IB Diploma.

The Diploma programme is a two year pre-university course which leads to a qualification that is widely recognised by the world's leading universities. With its reputation for academic rigour and emphasis on the development of critical thinking skills, the programme is highly esteemed by university professionals.

Mr Syme said the introduction of the IB Diploma is a natural progression for the School.

"The IBO (International Baccalaureate Organisation) has a philosophy that very much fits with Scotch's vision of providing a learning community with an international standard of excellence", Mr Syme said.

"With the introduction of the IB Diploma our students are provided with a viable option for university entrance in over 2000 universities world wide, including UWA".

Mr Syme said the IB Diploma is a course of study not suitable for every student. "We counsel every boy as to his choice of study", he said. "The IB Diploma is particularly suited to the disciplined and organized student which does not necessarily mean the academically gifted".

The College already runs the Primary and Middle Years IB programmes, catering for Years 1 to 5 and 6-10. The introduction of the IB Diploma for Years 11 and 12 makes Scotch the first school in Western Australia to offer all three International Baccalaureate programmes.
