Community, participation and future

Scotch College prides itself on the development of the 'whole' boy. As Head of Senior School, I have the pleasure to see boys discover their place in the world as they transition through their senior schooling to the world beyond.

In developing the 'whole' boy, Scotch College offers a challenging and stimulating academic and co-curricular programme which provides a balance between a student's intellectual, physical, emotional and spiritual needs, with a focus on personal excellence.

Curriculum and International Baccalaureate

Our academic programme is delivered within the framework of the International Baccalaureate and Diploma Programmes, the West Australian Curriculum and the Australian Curriculum. This programme encourages our boys to become inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. Boys in Years 11 to 12 choose between the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme and the Western Australian Certificate of Education providing a full range of tertiary education or vocational education pathways.

Our points of difference

Teaching and Learning

The Senior School teaches the Australian Curriculum for Year 9 and 10. In Year 11 and 12 students have the choice between the Western Australian Certificate of Education programme and the International Baccalaureate Diploma programme.

The WACE programme in Year 11 and 12 is based on the Western Australian Curriculum and offers students both the ATAR and Vocational Education and Training pathways.

The International Baccalaureate Diploma programme is an internationally recognised curriculum. It is a broad based two-year upper school course that runs parallel to the WACE as a pathway to university studies.

In the Senior High School, the Teaching and Learning programme encourages boys to become inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding, open mindedness and respect. Scotch College offers an extensive co-curricular programme. From the compulsory aspects of the College programme in Sport and Outdoor Education to optional opportunities in music (strings, voice, woodwind and brass), pipes and drums, public speaking, debating, chess, mock trial and mooting competitions, philosophy and the list continues. The co-curricular programme compliments the academic and pastoral domains allowing all students an opportunity to broaden their education and find a niche.

Scotch College's high school also runs an extensive Community and Service programme. This involves a structured weekly programme in Years 9 and 10 and continues into Years 11 and 12 through local and international service opportunities.

Community and Service

The Community and Service programme at Scotch has evolved over decades of engagement by boys in a multitude of service activities. Service action is facilitated through partnerships with agencies and encouraging boys to seek out individual opportunities to serve, giving tangible expression to our Christian values.

From Kindergarten to Year 12, boys have access to service activities framed around the Scotch Service Model cornerstones:  nurture; inspire; sustain; and connect. Service is at the heart of all three International Baccalaureate programmes, and central to our school motto of 'preparing boys for life'.

Boys in the Senior School complete a programme of Service learning during school hours in Year 10 which involves service partnerships with multiple external agencies working with diverse groups such as the mentally and intellectually disabled, the aged, the homeless and refugees. Service action also takes place in House groups and through Student Council activities. By accumulating Service points, boys are able to work towards awards of Colours and Honours for Community Service.

Senior boys at the high school have an opportunity to go on service trips to remote Australia, Cambodia, India and Tanzania. Learn more about out Service trips.

Pastoral Care and Wellbeing

Pastoral Care is the role of all in the Senior School. Collectively, staff contribute to meeting the personal, social or wellbeing, and academic needs of all students. Dedicated to this role is the House system which aims to foster support and connection through belonging to a smaller community within the school. House Heads and tutors monitor and support students as they move through Years 9 to 12 by being a constant in their lives, watching them grow and develop; intervening whenever it is needed.

The vertical nature of the tutorial groups allows opportunities for role modelling for the younger students by the older boys, as well as leadership opportunities for the senior boys. Leadership opportunities exist in both a formal and informal capacity as all senior boys are encouraged to take a leadership role in some form and when the need calls for it. These groups also allow for a wealth of informal pastoral care opportunities involving the boys and staff.

The formal Wellbeing programme is delivered by House Heads in order to help establish a positive relationship with the boys in their House. This programme forms the basis of a bond which will remain throughout the Senior School.

The programme is designed to develop well-adjusted young people and sits well with the College's over-arching mission and the IB philosophy. The basis of the programme, complemented by activities, aims to help boys form relationships with their peers and understand the workings of everyday Senior School life.

Supporting the classroom teachers, House Heads and House tutors in the area of Wellbeing and Pastoral Care, we have a Senior School Chaplain, two Educational Psychologists, the Deputy Head of Senior School and a Director of Wellbeing, who has oversight of Wellbeing and Pastoral Care throughout the College.

The wellbeing of all members of our community is a priority of the College.

Sport and Outdoor Education


Sport is a valuable component of the programme at Scotch College. The School recognises the need for every boy to participate in sport and places a strong emphasis on participation as well as performing to individual potential. Participation is crucial to a student's development. All boys have access to the School's renowned sports playing fields and recreational facilities.

In addition to the Physical Education programme the boys from Years 5 to Year 12 choose a seasonal sport. There are a great range of sports to choose from including Basketball, Cricket, Rowing, Swimming, Water Polo, Volleyball, Tennis, Sailing, Strength & Conditioning (Year 11 & 12), Badminton, Cross Country, Football, Hockey, Rugby, Soccer, Triathlon, Touch, Golf and Surfing.

All boys participate in Swimming, Cross Country and Athletics and take part in Inter-House and Inter-School competitions throughout the year.

Outdoor Education

Outdoor Education is the ninth curriculum area and a valuable part of Scotch College education programme. Boys from Years 3 to 10 participate in a compulsory Outdoor Education Programme. The programme has an emphasis on environmental studies, focusing on the relationship students develop with and in nature, to exist in a sustainable world; building the body and soul through adventure, meeting physical challenge and developing an appreciation of the outdoors.

The School has its own Outdoor Education Centre, Moray - situated on the banks of the Murray River, four kilometres south of Dwellingup. The 66 hectare property was purchased in 1984 with the aim of providing students with opportunities to learn in a natural environment. Through the Outdoor Education Programme and Moray students are able to extend the understanding and engagement in the shared IDEALS of the Round Square, and specifically the IDEAL of Adventure

The Outdoor Education Programme at Scotch will build the body and soul through adventure, develop and test initiative, leadership and self-reliance while developing an appreciation of the out of doors. through a range of programmes including:

  • Canoeing
  • White water kayaking
  • Rock-climbing
  • Rafting

  • Field studies
  • Indigenous cultural sessions
  • Team/Problem solving activities

Information Learning Technology and Libraries

The Scotch Library and Information Learning Technology (ILT) Departments form a strategic partnership to create an environment at Scotch that provides each boy with access to the most up to date information through the most suitable technological tools for their learning. Through common goals each department supports the boys on a daily basis with dedicated teams delivering a rich curriculum.

The Senior Library supports your son in his studies from Years 9 to 12 as his focuses shift to achieving high academic results. The library provides many services to help him achieve his best and these include a comprehensive set of library research guides along with a significant investment in research databases. While traditional non-fiction books are available, the collection for your son is dedicated to what he would study in his courses instead of having a broad general collection. The fiction collection, however, has a focus on senior secondary reading with novels and epic tales being a greater focus for those readers extending themselves beyond young adult fiction reading.

In the senior years, your son's learning journey and its integration with technology shifts and changes as teaching pedagogies adapt to meet our educational goals and as new digital resources are adopted. He will interact with purposefully designed physical and virtual spaces that will support his learning in flexible, innovative and challenging ways.
He will develop his own unique ways of learning beyond teacher-directed instruction to exploration, collaboration with peers and self-learning. He will learn how to seek data and information, how to interpret it, how to extend it and most importantly, how to establish the veracity of what he reads. He will be well prepared for his future.

Specialist facilities

There are a number of specialist facilities in the Senior School designed to enhance learning. These include:

  • A commercial kitchen designed to allow boys to develop their culinary skills and allow the students to complete VET Certificate courses in Year 11 and 12.
  • Design and Technology laboratories for Wood and Metal
  • State of the art Science laboratories
  • Memorial Hall – incorporating a 250-seat lecture theatre and archive – presenting 120 years of Scotch College history
  • Dedicated Art studios and Media laboratories
  • The Bunning Resource Centre – a Senior School library with dedicated collaboration and silent study areas with a focus on connecting the boys to the world through digital signage playing various news channels
  • The College Chapel – our link to our religious heritage
  • A dedicated Music facility with room for individual, small group and ensemble lessons. 

Academic Extension

Senior School students are offered extension, acceleration and enrichment. Academic extension most often occurs within the subjects studied through a differentiated curriculum. In some cases, extension within a subject area may occur by acceleration through a course within a year group or completion of a course from a higher year group.

Enrichment is distinguished from extension in that it refers to the broadening of learning opportunities and experiences beyond the regular differentiated curriculum within classroom teaching programmes. This programme is designed for students identified as being among the most academically able. Three broad concepts underpin the programme, namely, broadening units that extend beyond the mainstream curriculum; school community partnerships; and a culminating task that celebrates student learning.

Academic Support

Academic Support in the Senior School is designed to support boys who are identified as needing specific support in relation to their learning difficulty or disability. The measures used to identify boys with special educational needs include analysis of school-based assessments, NAPLAN results, school reports, reports from external specialists as well as pertinent information from parents. Each boy has a case manager assigned to oversee the support that he is offered within class by his teachers.
